Suryabhedi Pranayama | Right Nostril Breathing | सूर्यभेदी प्राणायाम

One of the most powerful and beneficial pranayamas outlined in Hatha yoga is Suryabhedi Pranayama, also known as “Surya Bhedana” Pranayama. The term “Surya” means “Sun,” while the phrase “Bhedana” means “to pierce, enter, or burst through something.” In yogic terminology, the right nostril is known as Surya Nadi while the left is known as Chandra Nadi. The entrance of the right nostril, which speaks towards the sun’s vitality, heated vitality, or manly energies in our bodies, is located on the right nostril. Creativity and physical labor are controlled by vitality or energy.

By performing Suryabhedi Pranayama, you are sincerely igniting the sun’s energy or amplifying it. As per yoga, the sun should be situated near the belly button, as well as the moon should be located inside the skull. While the sun has a heating effect and the moon provides a cooling effect. During this procedure, we inhale through the right nostril and exhale through the left. 

Instructions

Suryabhedi pranayama can be practiced in two ways, with and without bandha. 

  1. Without Bandha
  • Sit comfortably in  Siddhasana or Padmasana.
  • Keep your eyes closed, and your body upright with your back straight.
  • With the use of your little finger and ring finger seal your left nostril.
  • Breathe deep and gently from your right nostril
  • After inhaling close your right nostril with your right thumb
  • Exhale through your left nostril, while keeping your right one closed. 
  • Practice it 5-10 times in the beginner stage.

  1. With Bandha
  • Sit down comfortably on the floor in Siddhasana or Padmasana 
  • Keep your eyes closed, and your body upright with your back straight.
  • With the use of your little finger and ring finger seal your left nostril as we did in the procedure ‘without bandha.’.
  • Now take a few silent, deep breaths. Don’t make any noise while you inhale.
  • Use your right hand’s thumb to cover your right nostril while keeping your left nostril closed as well.
  • Keep holding your breath while performing the Jalandhar bandha (Hold your breath while lowering your chin to rest it on your throat’s pit.)
  • For five to ten seconds, hold this position with your bandha.
  • Keep your breath locked for a considerably comfortable amount.
  • Slowly release the Jalandhar bandha as you exhale from the left nostril.

Contraindications

  • It should be performed four to five hours after eating. 
  • Always breathe in via your right nostril and exhale solely through your left nostril. 
  • If you suffer from high BP, heart-related ailments, or epilepsy, try to avoid this pranayama. 
  • If you have recently undergone surgery, consult your doctor before performing this. 
  • Do not perform Suryabhedi pranayama during summer. 
  • Avoid this exercise in case of indigestion, acid reflux, or diarrhea.
  • Skip the bandha part if you are suffering from hypertension or anxiety.
